Bloom Hair Salon Ready to Open

Bloom Hair Salon owner Kayla Detwiler always knew she wanted to open a salon.

"I remember writing a paper in high school on what you wanted to do after graduation, and it was always the same answer – opening a salon," Detwiler said.

The salon, located on 2nd Street, is hoping to be ready to open by tomorrow, March 25. Detwiler will be strictly by-appointment in the beginning and then will designate walk-in hours.

"I remember having to work on trick-or-treat, and I cried the whole night," Detwiler said because she missed the event with her three children – Tucker, Tanner, and Charlotte. "Ever since that night and coupled with the pandemic really just put things into perspective. I want to be in control of my schedule, and balance both being a mom and having a career I love."

As for the salon, the following services will be offered: haircuts, color and waxing. Detwiler wants to eventually bring in a nail tech, an esthetician and a lash technician.

The name Bloom came from the quote, "Bloom where you are planted."

For the location, Detwiler said, "I love our town, and I wanted it to be where I was from."

The building was once the house of Gorsuch Auto Parts and the old Williamsburg OIP and provided a lot of work for Detwiler.

"I have to thank my husband, Joe, and my father-in-law Denny, they did a lot of the dirty work," Detwiler said.

She also thanked Craig Walters and Owen Knisley for their constructive expertise.

"We definitely wanted to use local people," said Detwiler.

The salon has a cozy vibe, which Detwiler credits to Lisa Meadows, owner of the Towne Buzz in Hollidaysburg, where Detwiler was both a client and an employee. According to Detwiler, it was "a great salon and a great atmosphere."

One of Detwiler's main inspirations is her grandfather, Jesse Detwiler, who passed away November of last year.

"My entire life he inspired me to work hard and to be a good person," said Detwiler. "He was my greatest role model. One of the last conversations I had with him was showing him pictures of the salon progress and him telling me how proud he was of me. I so wanted him to see the completion of this project but now I know that he's just cheering me on from heaven with a front row seat."
