Williamsburg Basketball Teams Face Losses in District Finals

The Williamsburg Blue Pirates and Lady Pirates both qualified for the PIAA District 6 Class 1A Championship games at Mount Aloysius in Cresson on Friday, March 4, but neither was able to come up with a victory.

The Lady Pirates started strong against the Portage Mustangs, ending the first quarter ahead by 6 points, but were outscored by Portage in the remaining quarters. Portage was able to hold off Williamsburg for a final score of 52-47. Portage faces WPIAL fifth place finisher West Greene High School in the first round of state playoffs on March 9 at the Mount. Williamsburg meets District 9 fourth place finisher Ridgeway at Claysburg-Kimmel, also on March 9.

In the boys' game played immediately after the girls', Williamsburg was able to stay strong in the first half, trailing Bishop Carroll by just three points, 29-26. However the Huskies dominated the Blue Pirates in the third quarter 24-9, finally beating Williamsburg by a score of 67-52 to claim the district championship.

Bishop Carroll will host District 9 fourth place finisher North Clarion in Ebensburg. The Williamsburg boys will play Otto-Eldred, who finished third place in District 9, at Hollidaysburg. Both games will be played on March 9.
