Gene was the son of the late George C. and Hazel (Gunnett) Smith. On Sept. 10, 1955, he married Mary Jane (Riley) Smith and together they shared 49 years of marriage until her death July 2005.

Gene is survived by his second wife, Anna (Fagans) Smith, with whom he shared 14 years of marriage. Also surviving are a son, Gerald Smith (Linda) of Martinsburg; a daughter, Nancy Byler (Conrad) of Martinsburg; two granddaughters: Valerie Detwiler (CA) and Megan Frederick (Mark); a grandson, Joseph Byler (Tana); seven great-grandchildren: Mason and Juleah Byler, Carly and Gabe Detwiler, and Trent, Jack, and Brooke Frederick; and three siblings: George and Wayne Smith both of Martinsburg, and Audrey Helsel of Ebensburg.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Smith.

Gene was a graduate of Morrisons Cove High School, and a faithful member of Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church, where he worshipped for his entire life.

He was a life-long dairy farmer in Martinsburg. After his health prohibited him from working on the farm, Gene would go on long car rides throughout the Cove to enjoy watching the progress of the farmers’ hard work in their fields, especially those of his son, Gerald. He also enjoyed spending winters in Florida and watching sports on television, especially Pirate baseball.

A private service will be held at Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church. Pastor Brian L. McCall will officiate. Interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

Memorial contributions in memory of Gene may be given to Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church - (Camp Mantowagan), 300 S. Mulberry St., Martinsburg, PA 16662.
