After years of discussion, Martinsburg Community Library has installed a coffee bar.
"Board members have wanted one, but we were waiting for the right time to purchase it," said Director Danette Feathers.
The library set up a card table for now, but Feathers said they hope to add an area rug and comfortable couch or chairs.
The coffee bar has coffee (regular and decaf), tea and hot chocolate. Everything is $1.
"We say proceeds benefit the library, but we're mostly just hoping the coffee bar makes enough to maintain itself," said Feathers.
The bar itself was custom made by Austin Berkhimer of Cross Cove Metal Works. The library wanted to make sure the bar was high enough so that kids couldn't get into the water. According to Feathers, Berkhimer uses profits from his metalworking to go on mission trips to Barbuda.
"We were thankful to work with a local young man," said Feathers.
"We want to open the library as a community," said Feathers. "Come relax with your community."
The first people to use the new coffee bar were mahjong players. The library hosts mahjong every Tuesday at 11 a.m. Here are some other events offered by Martinsburg Community Library:
• Preschool Storytime – Fridays at 10:30 a.m. (when school is in session)
• Pokemon Card Club – First Monday of each month
• Lego Club – Second Tuesday of each month
• Cove Book Club – Second Tuesday of each month
• STEM for Elementary and Middle School – once a month
• Craft Activity – Once a month
• Family Activity – Once a month
Feathers is looking to implement more programs for adults. She said the mahjong players are going to start playing pinochle on Tuesdays as well.
Anyone with suggestions can contact the library.
