A Roaring Spring man is behind bars and a warrant has been issued for his female companion after an investigation into the theft of alcohol led to the discovery of warrants.
According to charges filed by Freedom Township police, on Jan. 30, police were called to the McKee Sheetz after employees discovered a male customer, later identified as Dustin T. Lewis, may have stolen two bottles of Parrot Bay alcohol valued at nearly $16.
According to police, Sheetz employees said Lewis had picked up the two bottles of alcohol and walked over to order food. A store employee told police that Lewis said he forgot his wallet in the truck he was driving and left the store and drove away. The employee suspected Lewis of stealing the two bottles and surveillance video showed that he put them in the front pocket of his hoodie before exiting the store.
Police were able to determine the registration plate number of the truck from the store’s video and said it was a “dead tag” from Missouri.
With assistance from Roaring Spring police, officers located the truck parked in front of an apartment on Cherry Street, Roaring Spring. Police said a male and female associated with the truck currently lived in the apartment.
Police said they knocked on the apartment door and a female answered but was initially uncooperative and slammed the door shut. While police were checking out the truck, the female went outside to talk to officers and told them her name was Sarah Lewis. The female said she had her boyfriend on the phone and when police spoke to him, he allegedly gave the name Dustin Louse.
When police told the boyfriend they were investigating the theft of alcohol, he allegedly told them he did not drive the truck and that he didn’t want any more trouble because he had two DUIs pending in Missouri. He told police that his girlfriend must have let someone borrow the truck.
After police hung up with the boyfriend, they questioned Sarah Lewis about her boyfriend’s last name due to the fact it was spelled Louse but pronounced Lewis.
Police contacted the Missouri State Police and discovered the female’s name was Sarah Rutledge and that the male’s name was Dustin Lewis.
When police ran both suspects’ names through the Common Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN), they discovered Rutledge had active felony warrants out of Missouri for burglary and drug related charges and that Lewis had an active felony warrant out of Missouri for a parole violation related to drug charges.
Police said Rutledge and Lewis provided them with false names to try to conceal the fact they had warrants.
Lewis was arraigned by Martinsburg Magisterial District Judge Andrew Blattenberger on misdemeanor charges of retail theft, receiving stolen property and providing false identification to law enforcement.
He was committed to the Blair County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for today, Feb. 10, in front of Blattenberger.
A warrant has been issued for Rutledge’s arrest and charges are pending.
