Martinsburg Borough is reminding residents of the regulations at the composting center and the upcoming composting and recycling fee.
In a letter to composting members, Borough Manager Richard Brantner Jr. asked residents to only throw away biodegradable items in the composting facility.
“For about a year now, we have video cameras placed at the Composting and Recycling Centers for your safety and protection,” Brantner said in the letter. “Over this past year, we have had numerous residents discarding non-biodegradable material in the Composting center.”
Non-biodegradable materials include (but are not limited to): plastics, plastic bags, shingles, metals, concrete and pretreated lumber.
The borough also reminds those who use the composting center to keep all branches to a maximum length of 6 feet and keep wood billets off to the side.
Brantner also noted that some composting members have been giving out their key to non-borough residents, which is not permissible.
Those with questions about the composting facility can call Brantner at the borough office.
The 2022 Composting and Recycling fee is due by Jan. 31, 2022. Members can choose to have composting only, recycling only or both.
Payments can be sent to Borough of Martinsburg, 110 South Walnut St., Martinsburg, PA 16662.
The Martinsburg Area Recycling Center has been in operation for 8 years. It serves more than 475 residents in the Martinsburg Borough, North Woodbury Township and Huston Township area. On a monthly average, the recycling center collects over 7 tons of commingled plastics, glass and cans and over 13 tons of cardboard and mixed paper.
The borough reminds residents that Styrofoam, cloth and wood items cannot be recycled. Shredded papers should be put in a paper or plastic bag before going in the dumpster. Newspapers can also be placed in bags or boxes to help those who pick them up. Large boxes should be broken down to save room. Commingled items should be placed in the dumpsters. Do not leave commingled items on the ground.
