Barn a Total Loss in Fire
Herald of Dec. 12, 1946
Martinsburg firemen were called to a large barn fire near Loysburg. Dean Hale, owner of the barn, was not home at the time, but a neighbor, William Pressel, saw the fire and was able to free the livestock. By the time firefighters arrived the barn was engulfed in flames, so they concentrated their efforts on nearby structures. The season’s harvest was lost in the fire.
An explosion at a home along Maple Street in Roaring Spring rocked neighbors the morning of Dec. 10. Blair S. Snowberger, 72, owner of the home, was switching the stove from one gas tank to another when the gas ignited. The blast blew out the doors of the cellar and kitchen, and shattered windows. Mr. Snowberger was badly burned about the face and hands.
Three Cove men, all veterans of WW 2, were on the roster for Juniata College’s basketball team. Bob Querry, Cassel Coffman and Bob Holsinger were part of the team that was considered to be taller and deeper in good reserves than in recent years.
