Jesse C. "Sonny" Detwiler

Jesse C. “Sonny” Detwiler, 79, of rural Martinsburg, went to be with the Lord Thursday morning, Nov. 11, 2021. The past few years he fought a long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

He was born Aug. 19, 1942, in Williamsburg, son of the late James & Elizabeth (Banks) Detwiler.

He is survived by four siblings: Lois (Ed) McCall, Thomas (Karen) Detwiler both of Williamsburg, William (Tairi) Detwiler of New York and Frances and (Stephen) Szynal of Ohio.

He married Sandra (Creighton) Detwiler Oct 13, 1962. Jesse and Sandra truly cherished the many years they shared together raising their three children.

Jesse is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sandra and their two sons: David (Kimberly) Detwiler of Utah and Ronald (Wanda) Detwiler of Tennessee; a daughter, Pamela (Paul) Jenkins of Georgia; and they have been blessed to have 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Williamsburg High School, class of 1960.

Sonny (JC) was a retired conductor for North Folk Southern Railroad and a Vietnam War veteran. His hobbies were hunting, fishing and wood working. He spent many years as a volunteer, along with his wife, with the United Methodist Volunteers-In-Mission (V.I.M.) Team. Sonny loved showing God’s grace by helping others. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hollidaysburg. The past year of his illness he received spiritual support from the Salem United Church of Christ and the UPMC hospice pastor.

A funeral was held Nov. 14, 2021, at Salem United Church of Christ, rural Martinsburg. Pastor Micah Clouse officiated. Interment with military honors was held at Salem Reformed Church Cemetery.
