Roaring Spring
James Dale Hummel, 92, of Roaring Spring, passed away peacefully Monday Oct. 25, 2021, at the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg.
He was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Shamokin, the son of the late James and Beatrice (Wilson) Hummel. He married Ann C. Custer on Sept. 18, 1954.
He is survived by his wife; three children: John S. Hummel (Natalie) of St. Augustine, Fla., David L. Hummel (Cheryl) of Huntingdon, and Susan Caccimelio (Jim) of Chalk Hill, six grandchildren: Meghan Braxtan (Jack), Michael Hummel (Brittany), Matthew Hummel, Elaina Neuder (Johnny), Annie Caccimelio, and Sadie Caccimelio; and five great granchildren: Kohen, Sydney, Addison, Emma, and Claire.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene.
Mr. Hummel was a graduate of Derry Township High School in Yeagertown, a 1953 graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., and received a Masters of Education Degree from Penn State University.
He served in the United States Marine Corp. from 1953 until 1962, achieving the rank of Captain.
Mr. Hummel served as athletic director, coach, teacher, assistant principal, and principal during his 30 years in the Spring Cove School District. As athletic director at Central High School he established the Tri-County Wrestling Association and the Central Pennsylvania Golf Association.
Mr. Hummel served as director of the Roaring Spring summer recreation program from 1959 until 1970. He was an active member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Iron Masters Country Club, Altoona Radio Control Model Airplane Club, and the Summit Athletic Club.
Friends will be received frrom 9:30 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service, Saturday, Nov. 6, in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Roaring Spring; Rev. Amanda McCaffrey officiating.
The family wishes to thank the staff and care givers at the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg for their support and love during his days there.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in James’ memory may be given to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church or the Central High School Scholarship Fund, 1100 East Main Street, Roaring Spring, PA 16673.
