The big news of the week--indeed the year--was McKinley’s overwhelming defeat of William Jennings Bryan. Shortly before 9:00 p.m, news of the Republican victory was telephoned into Martinsburg. “Immediately a great shout arose and enthusiasm was unbounded on the streets. A number of young Republicans from Clappertown and Royer came up on horseback and after riding over town halted in front of the residence of Major Bobb and demanded a speech from the Major who nobly responded.”
