New Enterprise Woman Arrested for Second Time in Two Weeks Jailed for Assaulting State Troopers

A New Enterprise woman already facing charges for allegedly firing a gun outside a Claysburg bar on Oct. 6 is facing new charges after police said she assaulted state police troopers who responded to a call for a domestic incident on Oct. 19.

Maria Beth Miller, 54, was free on unsecured bail from the Oct. 6 incident when police said she slapped, spit and kicked state troopers during the domestic call investigation.

According to Bedford State Police, troopers were called to a home on Lafayette Road, Roaring Spring, for a domestic in progress after the resident reported that a man and a woman had pulled into his driveway and began arguing. When the resident asked the couple to leave his driveway, the female, later identified by police as Miller, allegedly swore at him, told him to shut up and threw an empty beer can at him before driving away.

Responding troopers were able to follow Miller’s vehicle to her New Enterprise home where they attempted to question Miller and her boyfriend in the driveway.

Police said Miller began yelling profanities at them and ordered them out of her driveway. When a trooper began talking to Miller to try to calm her down, she allegedly slapped the trooper’s hands. Troopers then took Miller to the ground and took her into custody. Police noted that there was a “strong odor” of alcohol coming from her.

Police said that while they were reading Miller her Miranda rights, she kicked a trooper’s left leg, and after placing Miller in the back of a patrol unit, she spit in a trooper’s face. When police tried to put a spit hood on Miller, she allegedly spit at the trooper again, with spit hitting his chest and shoulder.

State police transported Miller to UPMC Bedford for a blood draw and while on a gurney at the hospital, police said Miller again kicked a trooper in the leg while yelling racial slurs.

Miller is facing five felony counts of aggravated assault with intent to cause bodily injury, five misdemeanor counts of simple assault, a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, and seven summary counts of harassment.

Miller was arraigned by Bedford Magisterial District Judge Kathy Calhoun and placed in the Bedford County Jail on $35,000 cash bail. She is due to appear for a preliminary hearing at Bedford Central Court on Oct. 27.
