Panthers Persevere In Defensive Struggle, 7-6

Northern Bedford’s defensive resilience propelled the Black Panthers to a thrilling 7-6 win at Juniata Valley last Friday night.

The previously unbeaten Hornets explosive offense was held to 183 total yards, 77 of which came on one big play.

“We never let them get in a rhythm and controlled the line of scrimmage the entire night,” said Coach Garry Black.

Northern was able to play most of the game in their own territory benefiting from 3 turnovers in the midfield area and one shanked punt to maintain a field position advantage throughout most of the night.

The Panthers took advantage of that field position to fashion a 35 yard drive for their only touchdown of the night. Sophomore Adam Johnson plunged over from 6 yards out with just under 3 minutes left in the first half. Collin Yeatts split the uprights on the PAT kick to give the Panthers the advantage they would need.

Andrew McMonagle pulled in a Lambert Palmer pass and rambled untouched down the sideline for a 77 yard Hornet score late in the third period.

Johnson led NB rushers with 88 yards in 22 carries. NB was outgained in total yards and first downs but was penalized just three times and benefited from numerous Hornet turnovers and errors the most significant being a botched extra point snap that cost JV the opportunity to tie the game.

NB is now 4-3 overall while Juniata Valley falls to 5-1. The Panthers host Claysburg-Kimmel for Homecoming next Friday at Panther Community Stadium.
