Seeing a bear in the woods is an outdoor highlight for sportsmen. Since bears are predators, having a close encounter with one can be quite unnerving.
I have run into a number of bears while fishing. The first of these was in the Beaver Dams area of Canoe Creek. This occurred "back in the day" before beavers were returned to the area, and there were many wild trout in Canoe Creek. Sadly the beavers' dams warmed the water, making the creek inhospitable for wild trout.
Anyhow, I was fishing my way upstream, catching a trout here and there, when I spotted a big, black animal coming downstream tow...
