Free-Silver Topic of Speaker

Robert C. McNamara of Bedford, free-silver candidate for Congress, gave a 90-minute speech in Roaring Spring Town Hall, first warning his audience that he would not tolerate any groans or hissing such as he had heard during the preceding address by Mr. Martin, the senatorial nominee from Johnstown.

The paper mill resumed business after a short shutdown.

Typhoid fever was generally prevalent.

The McKee correspondent noted that some of the Bedford County hucksters on their return trips from Altoona “behave very badly when they pass through.”

The Henrietta correspondent reported that nuts were very scarce.

Prof. J.T. Rothrock, state forestry commissioner, declared Arbor Day would be held Oct. 23 and suggested a list of trees that ought to be planted: White pine, red cedar, spruce, hemlock, white oak, chestnut, hickory; locust, rock oak, sugar maple, beech, birch, cherry and black oak.
