JOHN ROBERT SHUCK

“Beloved father, husband, and friend”

John Robert Shuck, 66, of Huntingdon, passed away Sept. 28, 2021, at his home surrounded by family and friends following a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Huntingdon Oct. 15, 1954, the son of the late Jack M. and Patricia (Prendergast) Shuck. He was united in marriage to Christine Baker-Shuck Nov. 27, 1993, at Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon.

He is survived by his wife, at home; his daughter, Brooke Shuck, and her fiancé, Dylan Wentzel, Pittsburgh; sister Jacqueline Shuck and husband, Robert Frank, Roanoke , Va .; brother James and wife, Joanne Haumesser, Bemus Point, N.Y., brother Jeffrey and wife Staci, Huntingdon, and brother Jack “Jay” Shuck, Huntingdon. Also surviving are his father and mother-in-law, William “Bill” and Susan Baker of Williamsburg; brother-in-law Ronald Baker and wife, Melissa, also of Williamsburg. Surviving nieces and nephews are Lauren Shuck Howard (Aaron), Jason Shuck, Tessa Clements (Worth), Jerica Shuck, Jordan Baker (Marra), and Rachel Greene (Derek).

John was a 1972 graduate of Huntingdon Area High School and 1976 graduate of Juniata College.

His working life focused on sales and service, starting with a paper delivery route for The Daily News. Following graduation from college, he worked for the Jack M. Shuck Insurance Agency, followed by employment with Richard Jehu, Yenkin-Majestic Paint Company, and, for twenty-seven years until his death, Chemung Supply Corporation headquartered in Elmira, N.Y.

During his life, John was a member of many organizations including the Huntingdon Area Jaycees and Elks Lodge 976. He was a long-time supporter, board member, and 40-year treasurer of the Huntingdon Community Center, where, following his exit from the board, it was said, “We’ve discovered it takes at least three people to complete the work he was doing.”

He served a term on the Huntingdon Borough Council and held the position of council president. He was also long-time director of Huntingdon Savings and Loan.

John was a skilled and avid golfer who played for his high school and college golf teams. One of his favored memories of college was winning the Blair Miller Senior Golfer of the Year award. He participated in several area golf leagues as a highly ranked tournament player and was a board member and officer of the Huntingdon Country Club when it was still member owned. He was a 50- year member of the Central Counties Golf Association, frequently serving as tournament chairman.

He had a life-long love of baseball (Go Pirates!), moving up the steps from Farm to Little to Teener and finally to City League, where he was both a player and an officer. He also played in local adult softball and basketball leagues. His favorite pastimes included sitting with family and friends at Altoona Curve games and traveling with his wife and daughter; especially to the National Parks, Myrtle Beach, and Disney World.

His most favorite pastime, along with Chris, was spending time with his daughter. He especially loved going to her sporting events, musical concerts, and other activities in high school and college. He was a huge supporter of her academic accomplishments and was proud to teach and coach her in the game of softball for more than 20 years.

He loved gardening and, under the guidance of his father-in-law, advanced to apprentice farmer.

His favorite holiday was Christmas. Not only did he deliver gifts dressed as Santa Claus, he embodied the spirit of Santa throughout the year, giving presents in the forms of parties, meals, rides, charitable donations, and, most recently, personal deliveries of canned and baked goods to friends, family, and caregivers. He never said no to lending a hand. If you knew him, then you know what we mean.

John and his family attended Donation United Methodist Church where he found great peace being included as a part of the church family.

A funeral was held Saturday, Oct. 2, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Sixth and Washington Sts., Huntingdon. Pastor Barbara Servello officiated. Interment was made in Holy Cross Cemetery, Huntingdon.

There was a celebration of life reception at the Stone Creek Valley Lions Club, Huntingdon, on Saturday, Oct. 2.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to one of John’s favorite charities: Huntingdon Community Center or Huntingdon County Humane Society.
