East Freedom
Ida M. (Butler) Ayers, 88, of East Freedom, passed away, late Monday, Sept. 20, 2021, at Homewood at Martinsburg, after a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 22, 1932, in East Freedom, daughter of the late Harry Leo and Ella May (Kauffman) Butler. On Sept. 17, 1954, she married Alvin F. "Pete" Ayers at Smith Corner Independent Mennonite Church. Pete preceded her in death on June 16, 2008, after 53 years of marriage.
She is survived by three sons: Jeff (Mary) of Camp Hill, Rod (Christy) of Roaring Spring and Mike (Sharon) of Martinsburg; six grandchildren: Beth Ayers-Wright, Matt Ayers, Ty Ayers, Janelle Spencer, Cassie Ayers and Ben Ayers; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Annie Walk; and four brothers: Harry, Russell, John and Dean.
She was preceded in death by four sisters: Edith Corle, Edna Snyder, Ruth Barnes and Effie Shriver.
Ida was a 1950 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. She was a longtime, faithful member of Smith Corner Independent Mennonite Church, where she served in many positions.
She was primarily a homemaker, who also worked as a secretary for her brother-in-law's logging business and stocked various local supermarkets and stores for McCormick Spices.
Ida loved spending time with her family and also enjoyed reading, cooking and watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins.
A funeral took place Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, at Smith Corner Independent Mennonite Church. Pastor Dave McClanahan officiated. Private interment was held at Holsinger Cemetery, Bakers Summit.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Ida may be given to Smith Corner Independent Mennonite Church Ladies Aide, 1955 Johnstown Rd., East Freedom, PA 16637.
