This book begins in May 1941 in Philadelphia. Lilliana Swope is devastated when her mother passes away. Her mother made her promise to take a ring to her Aunt Hyacinth in No Creek, NC. After the funeral, Lilliana lays down on a pew in the church. She overhears her father and husband conspire to have her put in an institution as mentally unstable.
