Cove Fliers Win Air Race

An air race, topped off with stunt fliers, drew the greatest crowd ever assembled at the Blair County Airport on Sept. 22. Local fliers Charles Ake Jr., Hubert Hershberger and Paul Metzler placed first, second and third in the 85-hp air race.
The meat shortage was affecting the sense of honesty in some Cove people because Mahlon Wineland was aroused by the barking of his dogs to discover that six of his nicest young chickens were gone.
Ray Baumgartner, Martinsburg RD 1 farmer, reported one of the best crop yields of the season: 500 bushels of wheat from a 10-acre field...
