A Long Time Comin’ By Robin W. Pearson
Evelyn wanted to leave her husband, Kevin. He had been unfaithful to her. She could never forgive him. He said he was sorry but the pain was too deep. Her mother, Liz, called to let her know that Granny B was sick. Liz and Evelyn were the only ones in the family who were still connected to Granny B. The rest were off tending to their families. Evelyn always had a special place in Granny B’s life. Her middle name was the same, Beatrice. Liz had learned from a friend that Granny B was sick. She felt that it was up to Evelyn and herself to see that Granny B got the medical help she needed. Evelyn found this a good excuse to leave home. Kevin would be on a business trip and she had quit her teaching job so she might as well go see Granny B.
Granny B had lived a hard life. Her husband had left her to raise her children. She raised seven children and lost two. She was dying from acute myeloid leukemia. Granny B saw that Evelyn was pregnant. What was she running away from? Evelyn persuaded Granny B to mend fences with her children before she died. Granny B wrote each one a letter. The children had moved on to various lifestyles. Liz was the oldest. Little Ed was in prison. Ruthena spent all her time in her church. There was Mary, Sarah, Thomas and Milton. Milton was the youngest. For some reason, Granny B had little time for Milton. Granny B spent her last days dealing with the past and the truth she hid for them.
