Putting cows on the front page since 1885.
The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Central PA committee announces the return of the Making Strides Walk Kickoff event for today, Aug. 19, 2021, on the front plaza at Lakemont Park from 4 until 6 p.m. The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Central PA walk and kickoff are held to unite communities, honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, with more than 1 million passionate participants supporting the noncompetitive three-to five-mile walks each year.
The Central PA walk includes a scenic stroll through Lakemont Park, making this the idyllic setting for the Kickoff event on today, Aug. 19. Pre-COVID, the kickoff was held in the Casino at Lakemont Park. The local committee chose an outdoor Kickoff this year.
Committee member Jill Reigh said, “As Making Strides volunteers, because we have each been personally affected by breast cancer, recognize the urgent need to reconnect with breast cancer survivors, along with their family members and friends who have been out of contact during the isolation brought on by the pandemic.”
Rabbi Audrey Korotkin, Central PA Strides Committee Chair and breast cancer survivor said, “Cancer doesn’t care if the pandemic has upended our lives. People in our community are still being diagnosed with cancer, undergoing treatment, and in need of support for them and their families. We want to make sure that ACS has these services available, so we need to be proactive in raising funds and awareness. That means registering now and fundraising now, utilizing all the online resources that ACS offers as well as our circles of families and friends.”
The kickoff event is being held in partnership with “Let’s Move Blair County” at Lakemont Park today, Aug. 19, by the Healthy Blair County Coalition.
Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.
The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Central PA walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021, at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
