Piney Creek Farmer Dies

John Raymond Rhodes, Piney Creek farmer, died at Nason Hospital after drinking poison which he apparently thought was water while threshing at his farm.
Eddie King, 9, of Salemville, wrote a friendly note and stuck it in the pocket of a coat he was giving for overseas relief. He was surprised to receive a letter of thanks from his new friend, Frits, of Amsterdam.
Marine Pfc. Guy Clapper Jr. would not be able to return to join his father in operating an airport in the Cove since he perished in a crash in the South Pacific, but his father was still opening the airport in Williamsburg.
Seaman First Class Virgil Stayer, the third one of four brothers to return home from the service with his discharge, arrived home in Martinsburg.
A golden harvest, the most golden in almost 25 years, was getting into full swing in Morrisons Cove. In most sections of the Cove, the wheat and barley yield was reported as good as, or somewhat better than average.
