Putting cows on the front page since 1885.
Two hundred and forty years ago, on Sunday, June 3, 1781, the only actual event of the American Revolution of this region took place on soil that is within present-day Blair County.
A detachment of Bedford County Rangers left Fort Fetter (present-day Wye Switches) in search of an Amerindian War Party that had killed a settler and took his wife and children captive. The rangers hoped to overtake the war party to free the captives. When they had advanced approximately two miles from the fort, they were ambushed by a large party of Seneca warriors and a platoon of British soldiers led by British Lieutenant Robert Nelles out of fort Niagra. Forty-four rangers were ambushed. Eleven men were killed, five wounded, ten taken captive (three of these later died).
A new monument honoring these fallen patriots has been erected by the Frontier Patriots Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in cooperation with Imler’s Poultry Company.
The public is invited to attend this dedication on Saturday, July 10, at 11 a.m.
It is located on Route 764, south of Imler’s Poultry Food Store at the intersection with Theater Drive.
