Ask the Williamsburgers

This week has been special, as we had the chance to celebrate the men in our lives – our dads and grandfathers.

My sister and I were absolutely blessed when it came to our Pappy Pete Speck and Pappy Gene Gorsuch, but extraordinarily blessed when it comes to our dad, Richard Gorsuch, who is a wonderful example of what a man should be, as well as how a dad should be.

On Sunday, my dad and I trekked to breakfast before heading to our favorite spot, Rocky Gap Casino Resort to do one of our favorite past times: gambling. Lucky for me, I was the big winner this time!

This inspired my question for the week – "What is a good memory you have of your Dad?" Here is what a few residents had to say:

Pamela Stock: His love for his family and God.

Renee Douglas: How proud he was when I eventually graduated from college.

Scott Whitaker: Always being supportive of my brother and I, and encouraging us to succeed and live life with integrity.

Alan Brubaker: Fishing for trout.

Goldie Simpson: My dad's hard work. He woke up everyday headed to his full-time job at the Altoona Post Office. Many times, he would come home around 5:30 p.m., eat, shower and head off to his part-time job as a police officer in town and not get home until midnight before heading back to work in the morning. Many weekends, he headed to Johnstown to the armory where he was a sergeant part time in the Army National Guard. He did this for many years up to his retirement from all three. I never remember my Dad missing a day of work. I will forever be proud of my father for providing for my sister, my mom and myself to live a wonderful life and how he took care of his family. He showed me how to work hard for the things I wanted in life and to persevere through all the ups and downs life throws at you.

Sheryl Hart: He taught me to love and play baseball. Discussing the upcoming Pirate season, during spring training was a ritual for us until he passed. I miss that.

Judy Clabaugh: Dad always was singing when he was driving. He loved music and loved to dance.

James Flaig III: How he always treated my mother like a woman should be treated and him coaching all my sports teams as a youngster.

Josh Detwiler: Killing my first deer. Now he just goes for laughs.

Jeffrey Schwaderer: How well he treated my wife and our girls.

Sarah Albright: Holding his hands over my ears at the fireworks.

Ashley Morgan: Everything! He is hard-working, caring, loving and always made sure we know he loves us. Not only has he been a fantastic dad but also a husband and grandfather.

Naomi Wheland: Learning to do any outdoor activity really, he taught me how to hunt, trap, fish and work on the cars. My favorite would be learning how to shoot and taking my hunter's safety course with him.
