Darwin and Donna Stapleton are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 12, 2021. They are native Pennsylvanians, and met while working at the Lutheran Social Mission Society in Philadelphia as inner-city social workers. Subsequently Darwin, who is a widely-published historian, had a higher-education career in teaching and administration, and Donna was a social worker and taught at five colleges and universities. While retired they continue to provide short-term services and volunteer work.
Their wedding was at the Advent Lutheran Church in West Lawn, PA, and was officiated by the Rev. William Fryer. After Philadelphia their residences were in Newark, Delaware; Cleveland Heights and South Euclid, Ohio; Ossining, New York; and Quincy, Massachusetts. They now reside in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, and have a winter home outside of Tucson, Arizona. Their daughter Elizabeth Stapleton lives in Kent, Ohio; and their daughter Alice Sweet, son-in-law Kyle Sweet, and grandsons Zachary and Zane, live in Chaska, Minnesota.
Darwin is the brother of Margaret Steinfurth of Martinsburg, and the uncle of the Herald’s co-owner and publisher, Allan Bassler. Donna is a graduate of Juniata College at Huntington, for which she recently served as the co-chair of the Class of 1969’s 50th reunion.
