A local funeral home is seeing changes that may one day include a new family legacy.
As of April 9, Weaver Funeral Home in Woodbury has changed owners and become Stone Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc.
Longtime owner Sheldon Weaver said because running the home was becoming more difficult, he knew it was time to move on. However, it is not being given to someone unknown to the community. The new owner is Thomas Stone, who has worked with Weaver for six years.
"My parents bought the home in 1959 and I was born the next year, so I've always been associated with it," Weaver said.
He took over from his father, S. Gerald Weaver, when he died in 1999.
Aside from sending letters to those who had preplanned arrangements, Weaver said this was the first official report of the ownership change.
Those who were told of the news have been supportive to both Weaver and Stone over the adjustments, which have been in the works for almost a year.
Weaver said he was "confident" in Stone and believed his father would also approve of him.
"Thomas is very precise, so I know he will do a great job," he said.
As for Stone, he said he was excited to take over, stating that Weaver had always made him feel like family.
"I've always felt appreciated here and felt like I was in the right place," said Stone. "I hope I will be able to pass the home onto future generations of Stones."
Though Weaver is leaving, he said he would still be behind-the-scenes to help. He also has another business that has kept him busy.

As he leaves, Weaver said he hoped the community knew how much he appreciated them.
"I appreciate the trust they put in me and my family all these years," he said. "I'm thankful to help with their families during hard times. The people of the Cove are the best."
