Putting cows on the front page since 1885.
April 28 started out as a day of work on my property at 103 Ott Road New Enterprise. This was a day of trying to make my small stream look better without breaking any rules for cleanup.
Raking leaves and fallen walnuts and pulling items that were trapped in the muck, such as a rug and flowerpots, was quite the task. Wearing knee-high muck boots, I worked hard with a friend trying to make the little stream look more appealing.
A man stopped by in a van asking for directions to a neighbor’s home. The neighbor, who was my mailman for years and a wonderful person, was a friend of his. We chatted a little and discovered this man name of Joel Berkheimer had an interesting story to tell me. He said his father, Millard Franklin Berkheimer, had been born on my property.
Berkheimer was in town to participate in a revival service and was a gospel singer. His wife, Melissa, usually sings with him but was unable to travel with him. Instead, he was traveling with an interesting man of 87 years young: Pastor Leon Foote.
Both men were involved in revival services at Morrison Cove Baptist Church on April 25-29. As we talked, I became more intrigued with this stranger’s story and was invited to attend the Revival, which I did on April 28.
I had often passed the Morrison Cove Baptist Church, but I knew little about it. At the service that evening, I was introduced to Pastor Aaron Musselman, his lovely wife Laura and their baby of 7 months, Jerry.
I was soon to find out the pastor and his family had passed my home many times when out walking and were a close neighbor of mine in New Enterprise.
The biggest treat for me was attending this service and hearing Pastor Leon Foote give the sermon. This man is small in stature and has had many illnesses such as cancer and had to walk with a cane. He spoke from the heart and straight from the Bible reciting various passages. I enjoyed every minute of this sermon, but I was caught a little off guard when he spoke of lyrics about hell.
He told the story about the year 1954, when someone gave him lyrics to a song of what to expect in hell. There have been many songs sung about heaven, but usually we do not sing about hell. He has yet to find someone to put these words in song. Pastor Leon said “How can we trust in Christ if we do not believe about Hell? Jesus spoke more about Hell than he did Heaven. The Bible speaks of worms that will torment you.”
Pastor Aaron had a great-great-uncle Nathan Sell preach in this very spot years ago. He took the position as pastor there without knowing this. At that time, it was known as Appleman’s Grove.
The evening went on and Mr. Berkheimer played his gospel music with Laura, Pastor Aaron’s wife, accompanying him on the violin. Pastor Aaron also sang along with the group.
If you would like to experience this small but family-oriented church, Sunday school is at 9:30 a.m., Sunday morning service is at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday evening service is at 7 p.m. The Wednesday prayer meeting is at 7 p.m. To contact Pastor Aaron, call him at (814) 505-2923.
