Doris Anne Henderson, 95, of Martinsburg, passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 20, 2021, at UPMC Altoona.
She was born Feb. 21, 1926, in Houtzdale, daughter of the late Thomas F. and Ida Louise “Margaret” (Wiberg) Gorman. She married William Kyle Henderson in 1950, who preceded her in death Aug. 7, 1977.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia L. Henderson of Pittsburgh.
Doris received her bachelor’s degree in education from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Teacher’s College and later earned a master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University. She was employed as an elementary school teacher and reading specialist for the Tussey Mountain School District for more than 20 years.
She was a longtime, active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, and a member of the Martinsburg Business and Professional Women’s Club. Doris also volunteered countless hours at the Martinsburg Community Library, which was the place that held her two passions in life, books and reading.
Doris loved spending time with her family and also taking little plane trips with her family for dinner on Sundays. She also enjoyed crocheting and completing crossword puzzles.
A funeral was held Friday, April 23 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg. Pastor Traci Marriott Bowman officiated. Private interment was held at Beulah Cemetery, Ramey.
Memorial contributions in memory of Doris may be given to the Martinsburg Community Library, 211 S. Walnut St., Martinsburg, PA 16662.
