Bedford County Selects Eichenlaub as Permanent Prison Warden

The Bedford County Office of the Commissioners announced April 9 that the Bedford County Prison Board voted unanimously to name Joseph H. Eichenlaub, Hollidaysburg, as its permanent warden for the Bedford County Correctional Facility, effective April 19, 2021.

Eichenlaub’s salary will be determined by the salary board.

Eichenlaub was assigned to the BCCF as acting warden by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) on Jan. 11, 2021, and planned to retire from the DOC on April 17.

According to the commissioners office, Eichenlaub began his career in corrections in 1996, progressing through the ranks until achieving the rank of captain. During the past 25 years he has gained “extensive knowledge” and experience in jail operations and management.

Prior to being assigned to the Bedford County Facility, Eichenlaub was an intelligence-gathering captain at the State Correctional Institution at Smithfield. Before beginning his corrections career, Eichenlaub served in the United States Marine Corps; Third Marine Division, G-2 Intelligence and as a member of the Marine Anti-Terrorism Company.

According to the commissioners office, Prison Board members said Eichenlaub was chosen because of his corrections experience and proven leadership in his capacity as acting warden.

Sheriff Wayne Emerick said, “I find it impressive that he has held so many management levels in a wide spectrum of administration.”

According to District Attorney Lesley Childers-Potts, “During his interview, Mr. Eichenlaub elaborated on specific plans and goals to continue to move the Correctional Facility in a positive direction.”

Commissioner Barry Dallara noted Eichenlaub’s military background as a positive quality.

Prison Board Chair Commissioner Deb Baughman recognized the strong support Acting Warden Eichenlaub has from the correctional officers he will lead, as evidenced in a letter of support sent to the Prison Board from AFSCME District Council 83 and Local 3157. The letter explained the many reasons why Acting Warden Eichenlaub “is the best fit to keep the Bedford County Correctional Facility moving in the right direction and to keep everyone safe and secure.”
