The regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Spring Cove School District was held at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 15 in the Administration Office Board Room with visitors participating virtually.
Superintendent Dr. Betsy Baker updated the board on the district’s COVID-19 protocols status. COVID-19 case counts are currently one at Central High School, one at Martinsburg Elementary, and none at Spring Cove Elementary and Middle School.
Dr. Baker reported staff coronavirus vaccinations had begun, stating, “Many of our employees and contractors received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine last weekend and additional staff intend to receive the vaccine in the upcoming weeks.”
Through the efforts of Linda Lafferty, certified school nurse, the elementary schools will both be receiving new vision screeners in approximately six to eight weeks. Lafferty submitted a request to the Lions’ Sight Foundation asking for financial support to purchase two Optec 5000 Vision Screeners with carrying cases and supplies for Spring Cove Elementary and Martinsburg Elementary. The Lions’ Sight Foundation has already purchased this same screening equipment for the Central High School and the Spring Cove Middle School in 2015.
Also, it was reported that kindergarten students continue to register every day for the 2021-22 school year. The current total registered stands at 90.
The Central Mock Trial Team, after winning a district title, went on to compete in the virtual trials at Regional Competition, losing a very close match while competing for the title.
In educational matters, the motions to approve the purchase of secondary math textbooks from McGraw Hill for the 2021-22 school year at a cost of $151,019 was approved as was the purchase of new secondary science textbooks at a cost of $87,132. Instructional Software purchase at a cost of $111,047 was unanimously approved. The purchase of non-instructional software at the cost of $113,77 was also approved.
In school district coaching matters, the motion to accept the resignation of Terri Feather from the position of junior high assistant softball coach was approved as was the motion to appoint Paul Frederick as the junior high assistant coach, effective March 8, 2021, with a salary of $2,692.
Carter Replogle was approved as assistant junior high school softball coach for the upcoming season at a salary of $1,531. Additional game workers for the upcoming year were also approved.
A motion to approve four additional van drivers and one substitute bus and van driver was approved along with a mechanic for the district.
The motion was approved for a five-year service agreement with Trane for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) maintenance and inspection services at Central High School and Martinsburg Elementary, to be paid out of the General Fund. Also approved was a motion to approve the Trane service agreement for COVID-19 cleaning services for HVAC units at CHS and Martinsburg Elementary at a cost of $39,142. Trane will also replace the HVAC system at the Administration Office at a cost of $396,736, to be paid from Capital Projects.
Central High School will lose an English teacher, as the resignation of Andrew Kaminski was approved, effective at the end of the school year.
The next Committee of the Whole meeting is set for Monday, April 12, with the next Regular School Board meeting scheduled for Monday, April 19.
