BG Ends Dragons' Streak

The Central High School boys’ basketball team stretched its winning streak to five following a 51-18 home victory over Glendale on Feb. 4.

The Dragons led 12-3 after one quarter and 33-7 at halftime. CHS won the second-half scoring 18-11.

“We were a little bit sloppy to start the game. We missed some shots that we normally make, and we had too many turnovers,” Central coach Paul Frederick said. “We did settle in and play better basketball as the game went along. We hadn't played or practice since we played Saturday at Clearfield, so we were just excited to get back in the gym.”

Junior Devon Boyles scored a game-high 11 points to lead the Central offense. Senior Cassimier Lowery added 10 points and senior Hunter Klotz nine.

“We've been fortunate to have balanced scoring this year and that continued in this game,” Frederick said.

• Central 57, Glendale 24: CHS traveled to Glendale on Feb. 5 and returned with a 57-24 victory. The Dragons raced to a 40-9 halftime lead en route to their second victory over the Vikings in as many nights. The win was the Dragons’ sixth straight.

“I liked the way we started this game,” Central coach Paul Frederick said. “Our guys shared the ball well and we got into a good offensive rhythm early. Eli Lingenfelter and Seth Bean both shot the ball well, and our team defense was good throughout the game.”

Central sophomore Eli Lingenfelter tossed in a game-high 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Sophomore Seth Bean added 12 points for the Dragons.

• Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic 45, Central 38: Central’s six-game winning streak was halted Feb. 6, as visiting Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic scored a 45-38 victory. Tied at 7-all after one quarter, BG outscored the Dragons 23-13 over the next two frames. CHS closed the gap with an 18-15 edge in the final eight minutes.

“For the most part our guys played their guts out, but we didn't play well enough to win,” Central coach Paul Frederick said. “We had a couple of breakdowns defensively, but the killer was our shooting. We were 33% from the floor and 5-for-11 from the line.

“BG deserves a lot of credit. They did a great job playing their zone defense and kept us away from the basket for most of the game.”

Senior Hunter Klotz scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead the Dragons. Sophomore Eli Lingenfelter added nine points, while freshman Hunter Smith contributed seven points, nine rebounds and five assists.

“This wasn't our best performance, but I'm proud of what the kids have accomplished so far,” Frederick said. “We are looking forward to getting back to work this week.”
