Putting cows on the front page since 1885.
Spring Cove Elementary and Martinsburg Elementary schools held a safe fun event for their students Oct. 27 at the SCES in Roaring Spring.
Principles and reading specialists from both schools wanted to do something fun, safe and educational for their students who have been unable to have many activities.
Staff members from both buildings wore costumes and decorated their vehicle trunks after a book theme or name of a book...for example, "Charlotte's Web," "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat," and more.
I was greeted by the "Wee Dragon" who plays a particularly important role in SCE. This Dragon is red and breathes imaginary fire. The children have posters on their walls as a helpful reminder about what constitutes proper behavior. The acronym FIRE is used which stands for Fill Buckets, Incredible Helper, Respectful & Kind and Encourage Others. A symbol of fire rewards are given out throughout the school day and week. At the end of the week the students turn their fire dollars in for special prizes, rewards and more.
Wee Dragon is profoundly serious about the job that is required. It will be revealed at the end of the school year who the person is in this dragon costume.
Wee Dragon was genuinely concerned how the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the dragon's weight by 19 pounds.
Fifteen stations were set up with everyone wearing a mask and distancing between stations. Many cars arrived and drove to each station to get their special treat.
Stations consisted of a "A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee" presented by Mrs. Zangrill.
"Dinosaurs in my School" was presented by Mrs. Zeznanski and her son Odin. Odin played the role of telling teachers and students there was a dinosaur loose in the school, but nobody would believe him.
