Just a year and a day after the fine old Colonial dwelling on the Irvin Wareham farm in Taylor Township had been destroyed by fire, the large barn on the Elmer F. Smith farm, which adjoins the Wareham farm, on Friday afternoon was burned to the ground.
The 9-room solid brick mansion home on the Wareham farm was burned down on Oct. 18 of last year. It was built during the Civil War period by the Jacob Martin family.
The barn on the Smith farm likewise came down from the Civil War era, erected by the McMasters, widely known farmers and barn builders of long ago.
A large flock of wild geese on the way south evidently became lost in the fog and mist in the vicinity of Martinsburg about daylight Wednesday morning. The flock seemed to circle about over the town for some time before they could get their bearings and continue southward.
Gilbert A. Smith, Curryville grocer, has started the erection of a dwelling for his family a short distance from the store along the main highway.
