Dragons Move to 2-0 With Win At Bellefonte

The Central High School football team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 26-14 win as Bellefonte on Sept. 18, as quarterback Jeff Hoenstine accounted for all four Dragon touchdowns.

Hoenstine threw three touchdowns in the victory, including two in the first half as the Dragons (2-0) grabbed a 12-7 lead at halftime. Hoenstine tossed a 34-yard scoring pass to Josh Biesinger with 8:55 to play in the first quarter. CHS failed on the 2-point conversion.

Parker Gregg was on the receiving end of Hoenstine’s second touchdown pass, 26 yards, with 1:07 remaining in the first half. Again, the 2-point conversion attempt failed.

Bellefonte quarterback Ethan Rossman scored on a 2-yard run with just 27 seconds remaining in the half. Hayden Walker’s successful PAT made it 12-7.

The team traded passing touchdowns in the third quarter. First, Hoenstine teamed with Devon Boyles from 20 yards out. Hoenstine added the 2-point conversion to make it 20-7.

Bellefonte answered when Rossman tossed a 61-yard strike to Dylan Dann. Walker’s PAT made it 20-14.

Hoenstine’s 1-yard run with 6:15 remaining in the game capped the scoring.

“We thought they would be one of the toughest teams we would play and they were,” Central coach Dave Baker said. “However, they turned the ball over a few times.

“We had to play a very strong game to beat them. We played very well and limited our mistakes. We felt that we got a total team effort and showed great improvement from the first game.”

Hoenstine threw for 216 passing yards and three touchdowns on 18-for-28 passing. Boyles had four receptions for 55 receiving yards. Gregg had 44 receiving yards on four receptions, while Biesinger caught two catches for 42 yards.

Gregg led the Dragon ground game with 101 rushing yards on 14 carries. Hoenstine added 11 carries for 64 rushing yards.

Bellefonte turned the ball over six times - four fumbles and two interceptions - while Central had zero turnovers.

Central will travel to Philipsburg-Osceola (1-0) on Friday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

P-O’s game with visiting Penns Valley, set for Sept. 128, was not played due to COVID-19 concerns.
