Lester M. Long, 97, a Navy veteran, and his wife, Shirley, were at the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association meeting July 16 in Martinsburg. Mr. Long was presented a plaque and a document certifying that an accompanying flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol on April 2, 2020. The flag was flown at the request of Congressman John Joyce for Mr. Long, a World War II veteran who started the DESA Horseshoes Curve Chapter #37 on July 26, 1997. He was voted the first "skipper."
