Mabel Shirley (Gumpher) Barner, 71 of Woodbury, Bedford County, passed away at her home on Thursday, July 2, 2020, and she went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Born on Feb. 19, 1949, in Harrisburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late LeRoy I. Gumpher Sr. and Shirley M. (Grubb) Gumpher Pyles.
She graduated from Susquehanna Township High School in Harrisburg and she married Charles K. Barner on Jan.16, 1971, in Harrisburg, Pa.
Mabel was a financial wizard and wonderful cook and baker. She also was a head cook at Northern Bedford County High and retired from the school district after 20 years of service in 2002. She never really retired because she was constantly on the go, taking care of her family and grandchildren. Mabel was a member of and faithfully attended Bare Memorial Church of God in Roaring Spring until her health declined. She was an avid reader, loved to travel all over the United States (49 out of the 50) with her husband, shopping with her girls, doing crafts, and she loved to collect snowmen of all sizes. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her four grandchildren. She also considered herself a transplant from the city and when she moved to the "The Cove" in 1972 with her husband she never looked back.
Mabel is survived by her husband, Charles, of 49-½ years and her daughters, Michelle and Jeff Bookhammer of Roaring Spring and Melissa and Andrew Boyer of Westfield. She has four grandchildren: Elizabeth Bookhammer and Sarah, Thaddeus and Nathaniel Boyer. She is also survived by her stepmother, Shirley Gumpher of Lewisberry, and nine siblings. She has six brothers: LeRoy Gumpher Jr. and his companion Rosie McKeever, Robert Gumpher Sr. and his wife Dora, all of Lewisberry, Brian Smith and his companion Cindy Yingling of Glen Rock, Paul and John Gumpher, both of Harrisburg, and Carl Gumpher and fiancee Kathy Jones of New Cumberland. Her three sisters are Bobbi Jo "Sis" Whitebread of Etters, Cheryl Lynn Barner and husband Robert of Harrisburg and Shirley Miller and husband Sam of Dillsburg. Also, a sister-in-law Diane Barner of Hershey, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather Roger Pyles as well as her beloved grandparents. She was also preceded in death by a "very special aunt," Mabel Seler, who greatly influenced her life and whom she was named after.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, July 9, 2020, at Bare Memorial Church of God (500 E. Main St.), Roaring Spring. Pastor Steve DiBiase will officiate. Burial will be at Dry Hill Cemetery in Woodbury.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Bare Memorial Church of God and/or to Doubling Gap Center, Camp Yolijwa (1550 Doubling Gap Road Newville, PA 17241) to further the Christian camping experience.
The Weaver Funeral Home LLC of Woodbury (www.weaversfh.com) has been entrusted with the arrangements.
