Brooke Gochnour, daughter of Justin and Shelby Gochnour of New Enterprise, was crowned the 2020-21 Bedford County Dairy Princess on Saturday, May 23, at the Woodbury Area Community Center.
The new Dairy Princess was crowned by Denae Hershberger, the 2019-20 Bedford County Dairy Princess and State Alternate Dairy Princess.
Macy Walason, daughter of Jeff and Angie Walason of Imler, was named the Bedford County Dairy Princess Alternate for 2020-21. Savanna Hershberger, daughter of Ross and Yvonne Hershberger of Martinsburg, was named Bedford County's 2020-21 Dairy Maid.
Brooke Gochnour lives with her parents on their 140-acre, 225 dairy cow herd. She enjoys milking the cows every morning and evening and she currently owns 11 cows and calves. At Northern Bedford High School, Brooke is involved in varsity football cheerleading, FFA (where she was the vice president during her junior year), FBLA, and National Honor Society. This fall she will be assisting with the junior high cheerleaders as her senior project.
In 2019, Brooke was of the Milk Quality and Products team for FFA, which placed second as a team, and where she placed third individually. In her free time she enjoys riding her horse and riding snowmobiles. Her plans after graduating in 2021 are to attend Allegany College of Maryland for a business degree and take over the family farm.
Macy McDonald grew up on Green Slopes Farm of Imler. Macy's everyday chores at the farm are calf care, breeding decisions, and being in charge of the Green Slopes Farm's Show Herd. Macy has been showing Guernseys since the day she was born, attending a national show when she was a weak old.
Macy was the 2018 Bedford County Fair Queen and has won Supreme Showmanship at the Bedford Fair and Morrison Cove Dairy Shows. Macy was very involved and held leadership positions in the Southern Cove 4-H Club, Bedford County Junior Fair Board, PA Farm Show Junior Committee, Chestnut Ridge FFA and the PA and National Junior Guernsey Breeders Associations. Macy's hobbies are anything that is related to farm life or showing dairy cattle. She is very involved in community and church activities. She served as the church secretary, sings in the church choir, is coordinator of the church food bank and is coordinator of Vacation Bible School. Macy attends Pennsylvania State University, majoring in agriculture extension and education.
Savanna Hershberger lives and works on her family's second-generation Holstein dairy farm. Her jobs on the farm include feeding calves, milking cows, delivering calves and running tractors.
She is very involved at her school. She has high honors, is on the student council, and is a class representative. She also plays basketball and runs cross-country and track. At her church, she helps to teach a class for 2- and 3-year-olds. She also is in 4-H and shows cows every summer. Her favorite past time is playing with her little cousins and nieces.
Denae Hershberger is the 18-year-old daughter of Ross and Yvonne Hershberger of Martinsburg. Denae resides on ELDA-CHROSS Farms where her parents and four siblings manage 1,000 acres and milk 230 registered Holsteins. On the operation, she feeds the calves daily and assists elsewhere when necessary. In addition to this, she has a part-time job at Cove Creamery in Roaring Spring, enjoys babysitting her nieces and cousins, drawing, writing, as well as maintaining an active lifestyle.
Denae is currently enrolled in the School of Nursing at Mount Aloysius College with the intention to obtain a RN-BSN degree and certification. While she is not directly entering the dairy industry, she hopes to encourage the public to consume milk in the medical setting.
