The Pennsylvania Future Business Leaders of America Virtual Awards of Excellence program was held on Friday, May 15.
Claysburg-Kimmel had 23 members who qualified to attend the 2020 PA FBLA State Leadership Conference in Hershey, originally scheduled for April 5-8. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, alternate plans were created to host a virtual competition and awards program for the first time in history.
Regional scores were used for the testing events, and Zoom meetings were used for interview events and to record remotely for speeches and team presentations. These recordings were then sent to the PA judges.
During the online presentation of awards, PA FBLA State Secretary, Michael Baker of C-K High School, was recognized for his involvement at the state level the last two years. Michael and his fellow state officers also provided recorded farewell messages to the members of PA FBLA.
Sherri Steward, the director of Human Resources at NPC Inc., was chosen as the Pennsylvania FBLA Businessperson of the Year. The members of C-K FBLA nominated Steward for the award that recognizes a person in business and industry for their involvement and support of Pennsylvania FBLA on the local and state levels.
Claysburg-Kimmel sophomore Bailey Garver campaigned for the office of PA FBLA vice president at large. Bailey completed the campaign process by submitting her materials and interviewing in Hershey on Feb. 1. Bailey submitted her recorded campaign speech and online voting occurred earlier this month by the voting delegates of each chapter from across the state. As a result, Bailey was elected and will serve as a PA state officer for the 2020-21 school year.
The top 10 award winners were recognized during the online awards presentation with the top four advancing to the National Leadership Experience (NLE). The virtual NLE will replace the FBLA National Leadership Conference that was scheduled for June in Salt Lake City, Utah. C-K FBLA has 13 members in seven events who have qualified to represent the district and the state of Pennsylvania.
“C-K FBLA would like to thank the Claysburg Education Foundation and the Claysburg-Kimmel School District for their chapter support throughout the year and supporting Bailey Garver’s successful campaign,” Steve Walter, C-K FBLA advisor, said. “Thank you to NPC Inc. for their continued support and to both NPC Inc. and Claysburg Pizza Fundraising for their sponsorship of awards at the State Leadership Conference.
