James R. Leavelle, retired detective from the Dallas, Texas, police department, was the keynote speaker at the fourth annual Pennsylvania Police Pride Day and Pennsylvania Police Memorial Service held Sunday, May 21, at the Williamsburg Church of God. He was the officer who was handcuffed to Lee Harvey Oswald when he was fatally shot by Jack Ruby in the basement of the city jail. Martinsburg Police Chief Richard A. Brantner was instrumental in organizing the service.
The Claysburg-Kimmel softball team opened play in the District 6-AA playoffs with a 12-1 thumping of visiting Homer Center. Pitcher Linette Brown allowed just four hits in getting the complete-game win. Jill Knisely, Tina Hoenstine and Bonnie Helsel hit home runs for the Lady Bulldogs.
Diehl’s Crossroads Church of the Brethren celebrated its 140th anniversary May 7 with special services in both the morning and afternoon. The church had 89 members, and attendance averaged 73 for church and about 35 for Sunday School.
