LEROY EDWARD KARNS

Leroy Edward Karns, 81, of Roaring Spring, passed away on Thursday evening, April 16, 2020, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Feb. 4, 1939, in Cumberland, Md., the son of the late Roy and Katherine (Mellott) Karns.

He married Gloria Jean Weitzel on June 4, 1978, in East Sharpsburg.

He is survived by his wife; five daughters: Elise Evans of Martinsburg, Gail Graham of Claysburg, Kathy Lang (Kevin) of Altoona, Kristy Strait of Martinsburg and Katie Garber (Ron Ammerman) of Roaring Spring; 11 grandchildren: Alisha Karns, Erica Evans (Zane Pearson), Scott Harclerode (Stephanie), Joanne (Harclerode) Claire (Ryan), Randi (Evans) Farringer, Anthony "AJ" Lang, Kerri Lang, Cheyenne Beegle, Hanna Karns, Preston Strait and Adriana Ammerman; 13 great-grandchildren: Paige, Harlee and Daemyn Harclerode, Julia, Connor and Natalie Appleman, Kiana Karns, Aubrey and Ava Karns, Dakota Pearson, McKenzie Pearson, Colton Claire and Lillyava Claire; two sisters: Anna Karns of Bedford and Cathy Border of Schellsburg; a sister-in-law, Debbie Karns of Bedford; and five brothers: Charles Karns (Sally) of Osterburg, Mike, Lawrence and Tim (Sharon) Karns, all of Bedford, and Roy Karns (Debbie) of Martinsburg.

Leroy is also survived by close friends, Ed Holsinger, Tom Amick, Donna Kay Johnson and Dale Mellott and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Luella Karns; a great-grandchild, Cameron Claire; a brother, Edward Karns; a sister, Janet Clapper; and a nephew, Darrin Johnson.

Leroy was a member of Clover Creek Church of the Brethren. He also attended men's group at Woodbury Church of the Brethren.

He was a 1958 graduate of Morrison Cove High School.

He retired in 1999 from JLG in Bedford and had previously been employed at Roaring Spring Department Store, E.F. Smith Trucking, and he had driven school bus for Dennis and Connie Smith and the late Thelma Smith.

He loved talking to people, family, camping, hunting and fishing.

He was previously involved with emergency management, an auxiliary police officer in Roaring Spring, and was a previous member of the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department, Roaring Spring.

Due to the coronavirus limitations, a private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in East Sharpsburg Cemetery by Pastor Tim Guyer.

A public memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Leroy's memory may be given to the family or the funeral home.
