An iron safe belonging to C.L. Buck of New Enterprise was blown open and rifled of its contents. The explosion awakened the household and the robbers had to get away rather suddenly, leaving behind them chisels, braces, etc. No money was in the safe, but thieves carried with them quite a lot of papers valuable to Mr. Buck. The papers later were found by Jacob Latshaw in the outbuilding at the Pine Hill Schoolhouse.
David Z. Stoner of Martinsburg received a contract from D.M. Bare & Co. to build a new masonry and brick building for the Roaring Spring paper making operation. It was reported that the paper mill, book bindery and planing mill were running to their full capacity and the town was “booming.”
M.C. Barndollar of Everett leased to J.W. Wilson and Peter McConley of Punxsutawney stones on Tussey Mountain for the purpose of building the South Penn Railroad. One of the gentlemen offered to wager $25 that before the end of the year work on the railroad would be in progress.
