Local Woman's Career Started in Social Work; Ended in Libraries
Like many libraries, the Martinsburg Community Library is blessed with volunteers. Margaret "Peggy" Steinfurth is one such volunteer.
She attributes her love of books to her mother, Harriet Stapleton, an elementary school librarian.
In the late 1940s Stapleton was asked by the Kutztown Business and Professional Women's Club to start a public library in their town and Steinfurth remembers helping her mother.
"It was the second floor of an old building. We started with mostly donated books," Steinfurth said.
Some new books were provided by the state of Pennsylvania and were sent through the mail...
