John David Szymckec Sr., 81, of Martinsburg, died on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020, at UPMC Altoona, following a brief illness.

A funeral was held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, at the Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., http://www.thompsonfh.com, Roaring Spring. Pastor Suzanne Morelli officiated.

Interment was made in Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.

John was born on Aug. 31, 1938, in Roaring Spring the son of the late Walter "Skee" and Ruth (Hoover) Szymckec.

He married Carolyn Brown on June 27, 1959. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1995.

John is survived by three sons: John D. Szymckec Jr. of Martinsburg, Walter I. Szymckec and wife Candas of Martinsburg and Eric S. Szymckec and girlfriend Michelle Milton of Martinsburg; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

John was a 1956 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg.

He was a United States Army veteran.

John retired in 2000 from Appvion with nearly 40 years of service.

John was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Martinsburg, where he had served as an usher.

He enjoyed playing basketball, square dancing, camping, and traveling, especially taking cruises.

He was a member of the Woodbury Lodge F&AM, The Jaffa Shrine, where he was active in the Jaffa Road Runners, and he was also a member of the former North Woodbury Grange.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be given to the Jaffa Road Runners, 2200 Broad Ave., Altoona, PA 16601.
