Resident at Homewood at Martinsburg
Donald Lee Underwood, 91, a resident of Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of Holliston, Mass., was promoted to heaven Tuesday morning, Dec. 31, 2019, at the home.
A funeral was held Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, at Bice Memorial Chapel at Homewood at Martinsburg. The Rev. Gerald McCuller Jr. and Pastor James Neatrour officiated.
Interment was held at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
Donald was born April 20, 1928, in Grand Rapids, Mich., and raised in Racine, Wis., son of the late Lee S. and Mabel A. (Younggren) Underwood.
He married Genive E. Smith June 30, 1956, at the Martinsburg Grace Brethren Church.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 63 years: two sons: Wesley K. (Nancy) Underwood of Wheaton, Ill., and Harold R. (Beth) Underwood of Mechanicsburg; five grandchildren: Karl, Roger (Emma), Craig, Claire and Ben Underwood; and a great-granddaughter, Corine.
Donald was a 1946 graduate of Washington High School, Racine, Wis. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Wheaton College, Illinois, and completed his graduate studies at Princeton University, New Jersey.
He retired in 1985 from Gillette, Boston, where he was employed in research and development and as a patent reviewer with a total of 50 years of service.
He was a charter member of North Suburban Evangelical Free Church, Deerfield, Ill., and later was instrumental in building the Chapel of the Cross in Southborough, Mass.
Donald loved windsurfing, cross country and downhill skiing, aerial photography and building model airplanes and boats.
