Garver Memorial YMCA Offers Healthy Steps for Older Adults

Blair Senior Services had 21 participants for a fall prevention program in October at Garver Memorial YMCA, Roaring Spring.

Amy Williamson and Scott Moyer were the evidence-based program coordinators providing the information.

This program was free of charge to participants over 60. The goals were to change personal habits – environmentally – and much more that contribute to falls. A personal risk assessment was done with each individual which indicated their fall risk. After this program, it was estimated a 15-percent reduction in falls will take place.

Falls are the most common cause of injuries for older adults. Most falls occur in homes as they do their regular activities of daily living. Fractures and brain injuries can occur.

Bathroom safety is a must. Most falls occur in this room. A picture of safety items is reviewed in this course and discussion among participants provides a knowledge base of where to purchase the safety items.

Stairway safety was discussed with the group. Depression, eating well and doing things safely were other areas where adults can stay healthy and strong.

Any church group or organization with members 60 years and older interested in this training are asked to call Angel Dandrea at 946-1235. Groups of interest must be in Blair County.
