Trolley Kills Loop Farmer

Herald of Nov. 29, 1894

Michael H. Shultz, about 50, was instantly killed when he was run down by a car on the Cogan Valley electric railway about a half mile north of the Ant Hill turnout. He was a farmer from the Loop area of Frankstown Township.

The Herald published as usual on Thursday, even though it was Thanksgiving and a legal holiday. Services were held in the morning at the Lutheran and Reformed churches and a union service of prayer and praise was scheduled for the evening at Zion Church.

Forest fires were raging in the mountains north and west of Martinsburg.

A daily morning train to and from Henrietta was added to the railroad timetable.

Tramps were reported to be numerous. In Tyrone, a tramp was murdered, his throat cut from ear to ear. Two other tramps at the same camp where the murder took place were arrested.

A wildcat came down from Cove Mountain and battled with a flock of geese at Flowing Springs. A lumberman at Fred Gonsman’s sawmill used his pop gun to kill the cat, which was 3 feet long.
