Steeles Celebrates 70 Years of Marriage

Don and Sara Jane Steele of Hopewell celebrated 70 years of marriage at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019, at the fire hall of the Southern Cove Fire Company in New Enterprise.

A homemade turkey dinner with all the trimmings was prepared and served by the firemen's auxiliary. More than 75 people attended the event.

Don addressed their guests with a welcome and a few words. "We were blessed with a good family. I guess we did something right. At times I thought Sara Jane was being too strict, but I know now she was right."

Don and Sara Jane married Nov. 12, 1949, in Winchester, Va. Sara tells of their days of roller skating at the rink in Cypher Beach which attributes to their becoming a couple.

The couple have served and given back to their community for many years. Don has been a member of Cove Lions for more than 55 years and Sara was a chartered member of the Cove Lioness for many years.

Don loves to dance and continues to bowl. Sara is a member of Cove Community Club and both assist the Southern Cove Volunteer Fire Company in serving turkey dinners the third Sunday of every month.

The couple have four children: Rick Steel and wife Darla of Saxton, Denny Steel and friend Sharon Childers of Hopewell, Karen and friend Nancy Salack of Altoona and Teresa and husband Norman Sollenberger of Salemville. They also have three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The great grandchildren gave the blessing together at the event. Also, they served cake and ice cream to their guests.

Music for the event was provided by Dick McConnel with his old-time backporch music and by Steve Summerhill, who plays at Jethro's in Altoona on Thursday night.
