Central Captures League Title

Two Central Lady Dragon tennis team members participated in District 6 singles play Sept. 30 while the entire team played its final Mountain League game of the season on Oct. 2.

Playing at the Summit Athletic Club in Altoona, Kierra Mountain opened District competition with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 victory over her opponent from Richland. In the quarterfinals, Kierra fell to her Central Cambria opponent 6-2, 6-1.

Lindsey Kensinger lost her opener to a Forest Hills opponent 6-2, 6-1. Both girls struggled playing their first competition indoors this season.

The Dragons hosted Clearfield in their final league game and won handily 5-1, raising their record to 10-4 on the season and giving them a perfect 6-0 Mountain League mark. Kierra Mountain, Lindsey Kensinger, Aleah Trueman and Allison Brooks each won in straight sets to wrap up the win. Tomi May lost a tough three set match.

In doubles action, Kensinger teamed up with Kaylee McClain to win 8-2. Mountain and Reagan Bush were ahead 5-1 when rain ended the match. In exhibition play, Morgan Kennedy and Annabel Shippey were winners as were Ellen Kennedy and Adacyn James.

On Oct. 7, the Central Lady Dragon tennis team sent a pair of teams to participate in the District 6 doubles playoffs. Rain forced the competition inside therefore the opening round was played at the Summit in Altoona while the remainder of the contests were played at the Gorilla House Gym.

Central’s number-one team of Kierra Mountain and Lindsey Kensinger opened their play with a 6-2, 6-1 pounding of Bishop McCort’s top team. In the quarterfinals the girls again showed domination with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Forest Hills’ #1 pair.

The two wins placed Mountain and Kensinger in the semifinals against the district’s returning champs and top overall seed from Central Cambria. Central won the opening set 6-4 and led 3-2 in the second set before falling 3-6 and 1-6.

Allison Brooks and Tomi May also represented Central and won their opener 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 over Forest Hills’ number-two team. They were eliminated in the next round by Bishop Guilfoyle’s top team.

Central was to play Monday, Oct. 14, in the team playoffs against Central Cambria.
