Jacey Myers Volunteers at California Camp

Jacey Myers of Roaring Springs has recently undertaken a Brethren Volunteer Service (BVS) assignment with Camp Steven in Julian, Calif.

Camp Steven is a year-round camp and conference center with an emphasis on environmental steward ship, personal growth, and community development. Jacey will be contributing to socially conscious camp programs, physical property maintenance, and intentional community living. The internship is a unique opportunity for energetic and creative people who enjoy learning, growing, and contributing to the whole camp operation. Primary responsibilities include planning and leading youth and adult programs, hosting weekend retreat groups, and maintaining the campgrounds and day-to-day operations.

Jacey is a member of the First Church of the Brethren, Roaring Spring. Jacey is a 2019 graduate of Central High School Martinsburg. In school she was involved in organizations such as First Church of The Brethren Roaring Spring Youth Group, Student Council, Spanish Natuibak Honor Society, Foreign Language Club, Art Club and more. She received the Challenge Program Community Service Award, Spanish National Honor Society, and Honor Roll.

Jacey's assignment to Camp Steven followed an orientation based at the Camp Inspiration Hills in Ohio where a group of thirteen volunteers came together from all over the United States. For three weeks, they lived together as a community and studied topics of nonviolence, peacemaking, globalization, and simple living. They also gained first-hand volunteer experience working with local organizations in Burbank, Ohio and Hartville, Ohio. Orientation builds community spirit among participants through personal sharing, fellowship and increased knowledge of the world.

Jacey is taking part in a long-standing tradition of ministry through service. BVS, established in 1948, works at advocating justice, peacemaking, serving basic human needs, and maintaining the integrity of creation. Approximately 60 current BVSers in the U.S. and abroad work with various peace and social/economic justice organizations. They focus on many current social needs including care for children, youth and senior citizens; ecological issues; homelessness; refugee assistance; domestic and international peacemaking; and general community services.
