Northern Bedford
Northern Bedford’s volleyball team opened the season with a 3-1 home loss to McConnellsburg Sept. 3.
The young and inexperienced Lady Panthers did show some mettle, battling the Lady Spartans all night long and coming from behind to win the third game.
After the Visiting Lady Spartans rolled to a relatively easy 25-16 win in game one, NB pushed them to the limit before succumbing by a 25-21 count in the second game.
Down for the early portion of game three, the Lady Panthers battled from behind to take a 25-22 win.
“Our youthfulness and inexperience showed through somewhat tonight but we didn’t give up and were very competitive,” NB coach Terisha Mitchell said.
McConnellsburg jumped out to an early eight-point lead in the fourth game and held on for a 25-17 win to close out the match.
Madison Johnson led with 12 service points and five kills, followed by Makayla Kochara and Jenna Carberry with 10 service points a piece. Abby Zelanko also added three kills.
Northern Bedford dropped a 3-0 decision at Tussey Mountain Sept. 5.
Tussey took convincing decision by scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-17.
“We are still trying to overcome our inexperience but we keep getting better and that’s a positive,” coach Mitchell said.
Makayla Kochara had 10 service points to pace NB. Madison Johnson had five kills and Addie Sipes had three blocks for the Lady Panthers.
C-K
The Claysburg-Kimmel varsity volleyball team opened its 2019 campaign Sept. 3 and earned a straight-set victory at Moshannon Valley.
Behind 26 service points from Harleigh Cavender, the Lady Bulldogs earned a 25-7, 25-11, 25-14 win.
At home Sept. 5 against Williamsburg, C-K scored a 3-0 victory, winning by the scores of 25-9, 25-12, 25-10.
Haileigh Reed paced the Lady Bulldogs with 25 service points. Megan Hartman added 23 service points to go along with six kills. Harleigh Cavender added nine assists.
C-K improved to 2-0, while Williamsburg slipped to 0-2.
Central
The Lady Dragon volleyball team began its new season with a pair of tough losses. The Lady Dragons fell to Hollidaysburg in four sets and to Bald Eagle Area in three.
In their home season opener, the Lady Dragons came up short against the Lady Tigers 25-19, 25-10, 22-25, 25-13. Erin Brumbaugh had eight service points for Central while Lainie Heuston and A. Kitt added six each.
Bald Eagle Area won in straight sets 25-7, 25-8, 25-13. Jenna Carder paced the Dragons with four service winners.
“We played two very good teams to open the season and came up short. Our early season goal is to continue to improve each week,” Central coach Brad Heuston said.
Williamsburg
The Williamsburg varsity volleyball team dropped its season opener in straight sets Sept. 3.
The Lady Pirates fell in straight sets to visiting Mount Union, 25-4, 25-6, 25-6.
Williamsburg lost in straight sets at Claysburg-Kimmel Sept. 5.
