Successful Skills Found at RSCL

By ABBY MARTIN

In the year 2019, technology is at the apex of everything, from watching YouTube videos on how to make Christmas ornaments, to striving to have the most “likes” on a Facebook post. So, where does this leave the quaint community libraries of the world? Has technology eliminated any desire to sit down and simply read a book? Is there still a need for libraries?

The answer is yes; there absolutely is a need, now more than ever before.

According to the Washington Post, more than 50 percent of U.S. adults cannot read at an eighth-grade level. “Lack of formal education results in lower earning power and serious threats to an individual’s long-term well-being,” said Valerie Strauss, reporter for the Post. “And the current problems exacerbated by a lack of formal education will only get worse.”

While the statistics are quite concerning, programs at local libraries can help with this reading deficit.

A public library, with its vast collections of journals, books, magazines, reference materials, movies, audio recordings, and various digital resources is the prime location to assist with adult literacy.

The Roaring Spring Community Library offers several opportunities for adults to improve academic and professional skills, and also assists with referring individuals to literacy programs in Blair County. Currently, several adults meet at the RSCL with social service agencies to help further their work readiness and education, such as how to create a proper resume.

“A few years ago, we had a gentleman learn to read at age 50. He was able to take a test at work and gain a certification,” said RSCL Director Michelle McIntyre. “We also had a former high school drop-out gain a GED, and this individual now has an apprentice position in a union.”

Small steps lead to great success.
